CITRIC ACID MONOHYDRATE available in 250g, 500g, 1500g.

Molecular Formula: C6H8O7 * H2O

Citric acid is a weak organic acid, slightly stronger than typical carboxylic acids. Monohydrate means it contains one molecule of water (water of crystallization). It is a white, crystalline solid, easily soluble in water and ethanol, but insoluble in ether and chloroform.

Properties of citric acid monohydrate:

  • CAS number: 5949-29-1
  • Appearance: white crystalline solid
  • Synonyms: 2-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylic acid, monohydrate
  • Density: 1.665 g / cm3
  • Water solubility: 133 g / 100 ml (20C)
  • Molar mass: 210.14 g / mol

Applications of Citric Acid Monohydrate:

  1. Its ability to chelate metals makes it useful in washing powders and soaps. By chelating metals in hard water, it allows these cleaners to foam up and perform better without the need to soften the water. In a similar manner, citric acid is used to regenerate ion exchange materials used in water softeners by removing the accumulated metal ions in the form of citrate complexes.
  2. Citric acid is an active ingredient in some bathroom and kitchen cleaning solutions. A 6% citric acid solution will remove hard water stains from glass without scrubbing. In industry, it is used to dissolve steel rust.
  3. Citric acid used in photography as a retention bath. The developer is usually alkaline, so a mild acid will neutralize it, increasing the effectiveness of the holding bath compared to plain water.
  4. When applied to the hair, citric acid opens up the outer layer, also known as the cuticle. The open cuticle allows for deeper penetration of the hair shaft. It can be used in a shampoo to wash off wax and dye your hair.
  5. It is used in conjunction with sodium bicarbonate to create "bath bombs" that react together and disintegrate when placed in water. Usually 1 part of citric acid is mixed with 2 parts of sodium bicarbonate.
