How Much Wood Oil Do You Need?

To estimate the required quantity, calculate the total surface area and multiply it by the number of coats.

Then divide that figure by the expected coverage rate.

The basic calculation is:

Total surface area × number of coats ÷ coverage per litre = litres required

For example, a timber surface measuring 10 m² requires two coats of an oil covering 10 m² per litre:

10 m² × 2 ÷ 10 m² per litre = 2 litres

How Many Coats of Wood Oil Should You Apply?

Applying several thin coats is normally better than applying one heavy coat.

A heavy application may not penetrate evenly. Excess oil can remain on the surface, extending the drying time and leaving sticky or patchy areas.

Decking Oil

Apply 2 coats.

The first coat penetrates and conditions the timber, while the second improves coverage and exterior protection.

Danish Oil

Typical Drying and Curing Times

Drying time and curing time are not the same.

A surface may feel dry enough to touch while the oil beneath it is still curing. Full curing occurs when the oil has hardened throughout the treated layer.

Important Note About Drying Times

Do not apply another coat while the previous coat remains tacky. Applying fresh oil over an incompletely dried layer may trap uncured material and considerably extend the overall drying process.

Practical Quantity Examples

Example 1: Oak Dining Table with Danish Oil

Assume an oak dining table has a total treatable surface area of 2.5 m², including the top, underside, legs and edges.

Danish Oil covers approximately 12–15 m² per litre and requires three coats.

5 m² × 3 ÷ 12 = 1.25 litres

A 1-litre container may not be sufficient. A 1-litre plus 250 ml container would meet the theoretical requirement, although 1.5 litres would provide a more useful margin.

Example 7: Wooden Bowl with Pure Tung Oil

Assume a wooden bowl has a total internal and external surface area of approximately 0.3 m².

For five coats at 15 m² per litre:

0.3 m² × 5 ÷ 15 = 0.1 litres

The project would require approximately 100 ml of Pure Tung Oil.

This makes the smallest container suitable for a single bowl or similarly sized craft item.

Example 8: Shelving with Danish Oil

Assume a set of shelves has a combined surface area of 3 m², including both sides and the edges.

For three coats at 15 m² per litre:
