Agar-agar is a gelling agent of natural origin. Agar is made of the red Rhodophyta algae, mined mainly off the coast of Japan (e.g. from underwater plantations).

Application:

• mild laxative (causes swelling of food in the intestines),
• gelling agent in production plants,
• in photography (in the production of photosensitive emulsions),
• in chemistry (electrolytic keys, galvanic cells),
• in pharmacy (swelling, gelling agent and tablet initiating disintegration),
• in cosmetics (as a skin moisturizer, added to moisturizing cosmetics)
• neutral primer for the media used for the cultivation of bacteria in microbiological laboratories and in vitro cultures in biotechnological laboratories.

Agar taken in small amounts is harmless.
