Ammonium chloride is an inorganic compound in the form of a white crystalline salt. It dissolves well in water and its solution is slightly acidic. Sal ammonia is the name of the natural, mineralogical form of ammonium chloride. The mineral is commonly formed on burning coal heaps as a result of the condensation of coal gases. It also occurs around some types of volcanic vents. It is mainly used as a fertilizer and flavoring in some types of licorice.

USAGE:

  1. Metal processing

Ammonium chloride is used as a flux in the preparation of metals for tin plating, electroplating or soldering. It acts as a flux to clean the surface of workpieces by reacting with metal oxides on the surface to form volatile metal chloride. For this purpose, it is sold in blocks at hardware stores for use in cleaning a soldering tip, and it can also be included in solder as a flux.

  1. Medicine

Ammonium chloride is used as an expectorant to treat cough. Its expectorant action is due to its irritating effect on the bronchial mucosa, resulting in the production of excess fluid from the airways which presumably facilitates expectoration. Ammonium salts are irritating to the gastric mucosa and may cause nausea and vomiting.

Ammonium chloride is used as a systemic acidifying agent in the treatment of severe metabolic alkalosis, in the oral acid loading test, in the diagnosis of distal renal tubular acidosis, in order to maintain an acidic urine pH in the treatment of certain urinary disorders.

  1. In the lab

Ammonium chloride has historically been used to produce low temperatures in cooling baths. Ammonium chloride ammonia solutions are used as buffer solutions including ACK (Ammonium-Chloride-Potassium) lysis buffer.
