Potassium Permanganate is an inorganic compound with a violet-black crystalline colour. It is a solid that dissolves in water to give bright pink or purple solutions.
Potassium permanganate is usually included in survival kits as a hypergolic kindling, water sterilizer and to create danger signals in snow.
Potassium permanganate is widely used in the chemical industry and laboratories as a strong oxidizing agent, and also in medicine as a medicine for dermatitis, for wound cleaning and general disinfection.
Widely used in the water treatment industry. It is used as a regenerating chemical to remove iron and hydrogen sulphide (the smell of rotten eggs) from well water using the "Manganese Greensand" filter.
The following acute (short term) health effects may occur immediately or soon after exposure to potassium permanganate:
- Contact can severely irritate and burn skin and eyes, possibly with eye damage.
- Breathing potassium permanganate can irritate the nose and throat.
