Uses of Sodium Carbonate

drain cleaner laundry booster sodium carbonate

Sodium carbonate, also known as soda ash or washing soda, can be quite useful in various household applications due to its alkaline properties. Here are some common household uses along with examples and mixing ratios:

  1. Cleaning Purposes:

    • General Surface Cleaner: Mix about 20-30 grams (1-2 tablespoons) of sodium carbonate per liter of water to create a solution for cleaning countertops, tiles, and other surfaces.
    • Degreaser: For tougher grease stains on kitchen surfaces or range hoods, increase the concentration to about 40-50 grams (2-3 tablespoons) per liter of water.
  2. Laundry:

    • Stain Remover: Dissolve 10-20 grams (1-2 tablespoons) of sodium carbonate in a liter of warm water to create a pre-soak solution for treating stains on fabrics before washing.
    • Boosting Laundry Detergent: Add around 20-30 grams (1-2 tablespoons) of sodium carbonate to your regular laundry detergent to boost its cleaning power, especially effective for hard water conditions.
  3. Dishwashing:

    • Dishwasher Booster: Add 10-20 grams (1-2 tablespoons) of sodium carbonate to the dishwasher along with the detergent to enhance its effectiveness, particularly for removing tough stains and residues.
  4. Drain Cleaner:

    • Unclogging Drains: Pour a mixture of about 50-100 grams (3-6 tablespoons) of sodium carbonate dissolved in hot water down the drain to help dissolve grease, hair, and other organic matter causing blockages.
  5. Removing Odors:

    • Deodorizing: Create a solution by dissolving 30-40 grams (2-3 tablespoons) of sodium carbonate in a liter of water and use it to clean and deodorize surfaces like garbage cans, refrigerators, and pet areas.

Remember to wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area when handling sodium carbonate, as it can be irritating to the skin and respiratory system in concentrated form. Additionally, always test on a small, inconspicuous area before using any cleaning solution to ensure compatibility with the surface being cleaned.
